This design, an adaptation of the "Winged Globe," designed used for domestic
air mail rates, was issued in contemplation of the establishment of
transatlantic air mail service
The original design was continued, with the denomination changed to reflect the
new rate and the addition of "TRANS-ATLANTIC" above the globe.
The principal feature of this stamp design is the insignia worn by air mail
pilots: a globe with extended wings on either side and with a background of
rays of light. Upon the globe are the words, "U.S. air mail."
