The Brownbach Tiger Kitten was the original name of the Piper Cub, the brainchild of William T. Piper. Powered by a two-cycle, two- cylinder engine, the Cub was approved for flight in mid- 1931. It was an outgrowth of a glider Piper had developed while associated with Taylor Brothers Aircraft Corporation. In 1936 Piper acquired the Taylor firm and the following year produced 687 Cubs. During World War II, the U.S. Army purchased more than 5,600 Piper Cubs, using them for special personnel planes, photo reconnaissance, and as spotters of enemy artillery.
