Cardinalis cardinalis, the common cardinal, is a bird found in the eastern United States and parts of Mexico. Its name comes from the color of the robes of Roman Catholic cardinals. The cardinal is a member of the finch family. The male is bright red with a black throat, and the female is buffy-brown with red on her crest, wings, and tail. It is the official bird of seven states.
