On March 24, 1663, the proprietors of Carolina were put in control of what now is North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and part of Florida. Among the proprietors were Sir Edward Hyde, the Duke of Ormonde, and George Monck, the Duke of Albemarle. The domains that had been chartered by Charles II lasted until it became a royal colony in 1729. Charles II's name is on the first page of the Carolina Charter. Charles II was crowned in 1661, following a period of considerable turmoil in England. Hyde had been Charles' governor, when at the age of 15 he went west of England to escape civil war. Monck was an advisor to Charles, who was influential in restoring power to the Independents of the Presbyterians, following a loyalist uprising in 1659.
